It’s fifteen years after the Norsunder War. David, one of Detlev’s boys, is a man in his early thirties, teacher and guide at the new dyranarya school, revived after a four thousand year hiatus—and also a highly-trained military strategist.

His last student having gone off to a new life, he agrees to check out some rumors in the roistering chaos of the Fal Valley, infamous for its dueling squares. There is no central government.  But now, it seems, the powerful and enigmatic young king of Enaeran-Adrani is taking an interest in the area . . . and David intends to do something about it. He certainly knows how. 

But then he meets knife-bearing, swashbuckling smuggler Veris Torreha, with a cool and skeptical eye after a decade of fighting lawless bandits left over from the war. She joins David in his quest—and suddenly everything changes.

Caught between the agents of an ambitious king and the enthusiastic push of his Fal Valley rescues toward the traditional royal road, David has to navigate while dealing with the vital questions of identity, family—and love.
